More than 12,000 kids participate in The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley each year. And though the organization has come to rely on many individuals and groups for their fundraising help, the need to reach out to the public for support remains. This year for the first time you can stop by their booth at Octoberfest and purchase food to help the organization continue to make a difference in the lives of children in the Fox Valley. Marta Weldon, Director of Resource Development, says that the owner of All Things Jerky in Appleton wanted to help out since her own son goes to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley. “She chose us as the beneficiary this year and we are very grateful to her!” says Weldon.
And the treats available from All Things Jerky will truly dazzle your taste buds! Owner, Jessica Ellenbecker says that people buy their items at Octoberfest for themselves, as gifts for friends and family. “We offer deep dried peanuts. They’re actually fried in their shells and then seasoned, so you can eat the whole thing, shell and all,” says Ellenbecker. “We have four different flavors. They’re extremely popular. People like it because it is a great gift item, so they’re not only buying it to eat there at Octoberfest, but they tend to buy it for relatives and friends, dads, grandpas, uncles because it’s so unique.”
Alligator, Kangaroo, ostrich, boar, and antelope top the list of popular and exotic meats at All Things Jerky. New this year is alpaca. Ellenbecker describes the flavor of alpaca to elk, in that it’s fairly mild – tasting. When it comes to the most popular critter to be found in jerky form, that distinction goes to alligator. “By far, hands – down it’s alligator jerky or alligator sticks are the most popular. A close second would be kangaroo, only because it’s so exotic, and where else are you going to eat kangaroo today?”
The booth for The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley, featuring All Things Jerky will be found this year right in front of the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel. Stop by, visit, and then try some jerky. It travels well and it’s packed with nutrients for all the walking you’ll do along the Ave this Octoberfest!
