December a Month UWO’s Music Hall was Made For

BY ALEX HUMMEL

If it’s been a while since you’ve nabbed a ticket to enjoy a music performance in the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Music Hall, December is your month to get Bach into the swing of things.

(See what we did there…?).

The finale month of the fall 2014 semester is always full of UW Oshkosh music recitals, ensemble performances and full-blown concerts.

Leading off the month, on Dec. 2, is, actually, an off-campus gig: the shimmering UW Oshkosh Handbell Choir’s noon performance at First Congregational Church (137 Algoma Blvd.) in downtown Oshkosh.

On Dec. 3, the UW Oshkosh Jazz Ensemble kicks off the Music Hall mélange with a 7:30 p.m. concert featuring Music Department faculty members Rob McWilliams on trumpet and piano and Marty Robinson.

The Arts and Communications Center’s 500 seat hall is home to most Department of Music performances, ranging from University ensemble concerts, chamber performances—including the “Chamber Arts Series”—and student recitals. “Its warm acoustics provide an outstanding environment for instrumental and vocal music alike,” the music department’s website boasts.

“The Music Hall at UW Oshkosh is an acoustic gem of the Fox Valley,” said Assistant Professor of Music Dylan Chmura-Moore, conductor of the UW Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra. “Its sound is warm and inviting, well blending and amplifying multiple voices on stage into one rich cohesive unit.”

On Dec. 4, the UW Oshkosh Bands Holiday Farewell concert is set for 7:30 p.m., with Rob McWilliams and Heather McWilliams, conductors. The chain of performances continues Dec. 5 with a 7:30 p.m. Faculty Recital featuring Laura McLaughlin on clarinet, Drew Whiting on saxophone and Kirstin Ihde on piano.

The UW Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Choir perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 with Chmura-Moore conducting and Eric Barnum directing the choir.

The busy weekend concludes on Dec. 7 with an encore performance of the UW Oshkosh Bands Holiday Farewell concert at 3 p.m., featuring Music Department alumni, once again with Rob McWilliams and Heather McWilliams conducting, followed by a 7 p.m. performance of the UW Oshkosh Choirs.

And that’s just the first week of the month.

More concert performance information for the remainder of 2014 and into 2015 is at uwosh.edu/music.
