Uptown Tavern and Restaurant, 958 Sixth Street, Oshkosh, is a family owned and operated casual establishment, having recently opened on the south side of Oshkosh by Owner, Scott Wolliquette and sister, Cheryl. My husband and I recently lunched at Uptown, located in the former Mahoney’s historic building, escaping a hectic Saturday of responsibilities. Uptown’s comfortable classic cuisine, served in a charming environment, with excellent warm friendly service made us forget the outside world for a little while. I love architectural detail, and the Uptown bar doesn’t disappoint with a “Cheer’s like” beautiful red tin ceiling bar, inviting enough to get us out after dark for a future outing rest assured. They also feature a variety of delectable snacks during their happy hour, from 3 to 6:30 pm.
Formerly, Uptown was located on Main Street, having moved to Rugby when they offered catering. We are delighted to have them as a full service restaurant and tavern to add to the selection of nostalgic Wisconsin supper clubs offering traditional classics such as Friday Night Fish Fry.
How does Uptown stand out from the rest of south side establishment? Their exceptional friendly service with a smile makes the dining experience especially enjoyable. The myriad historic photos scattered around gave an interesting place to rest the eyes, and promote light fun conversation.
Uptown specializes in catering, but undoubtedly not to be understated, the classic restaurant menu includes French Fried Lobster on Saturday.
Now, how can you not try a new restaurant with something on the catering menu called Sparnfarkel? (Pig, Potato Salad or Augratin, Potatoes, Coleslaw, Veggie Tray, Cookies, Buns and Condiments ) Their catering specializes in appetizers or “small plates.” Over two dozen types available including all-time favorite “finger sandwiches.”
Back to the restaurant menu…the uber hungry among you will want to sample the (not-so) “Wimpy Burger.” Word is there will be a “Wimpy Burger” challenge coming soon with prizes for eating the 4 ¼ pound patty beast in a timed event. “Wimpy” is not what I would call two lbs of beef!
Not to be missed is an interesting selection of sumptuous sounding desserts, including a Bailey’s cupcake, complete with a miniature bottle of Baileys inverted in the swirled frosting. I also noticed on their FaceBook page that Sunday that they had homemade Baklava as well as Parmesan Crusted Swai featured.
Hubby can’t wait to come back and try the Golden Fried Chicken on Sunday. This is not a bunny food salad kinda place. It’s meat and pasta and all the goods for a carb unconscious coma. I ordered the daily special Saturday “French Fried Lobster” which melts in your mouth, and steamed-to-perfection broccoli, along with fresh creamy coleslaw. So much for my arterial health, but it was worth a splurge. Hubby had the lasagna, baked to a bubbling cheesy crust, and had a great time devouring every bite of the savory sauced goodness.
The menu selection and pricing is sure to satisfy most appetites and budgets, as well as have something for everyone to enjoy.
They are well equipped to handle large groups or intimate gatherings. They also deliver catered meals within a 60 mile radius for business meetings, weddings, or intimate home parties with a wide variety of menu items to choose from. They also offer making your favorite recipe. Now that’s something to remember for your next party or picnic!
The only improvement I could think of is perhaps a few more “heart healthy” offerings, green veggies or light fare for those of us watching our cholesterol. Overall, Uptown is undoubtedly unforgettable with cheerful staff and comfortable surroundings.
We’ll definitely be back with the family, and next time I will save room for one of their creatively concocted cupcakes.
